Enlightened Media for Building a Better World
Media generally means as an instrument, a tool or a medium. Journalists use this medium for communicating information and knowledge, to inspire and to educate people. Therefore, when we address it as illumined or enlightened media, it directly refers to journalism or journalists but not merely to hardware instruments. The act of communicating information, thoughts and their analysis or interpretation is journalism, which is transmitted to the public through media. In this context, media means integration of both instruments and journalists, and both come under the purview of journalism.
We all want a better society or a society based on human values; and we make attempts for this. Both the government and people think, consider and do their effort to satisfy this desire of the people. In the last few years, there has emerged a difference in this effort. People gradually started expecting everything from the government. The Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working without Government’s help, have either almost ceased to exist or become inactive. The NGOs working in the fields of education, health and other fields for building a better society and for creating value-awareness in people, are doing this primarily with the help of the government.
The source of value-awareness has been spirituality. The combined or assimilated form of the collective mind’s desires and feelings is the foundation of the humanity. But, the value system developed by socio-cultural behavior, government or governance, based on laws, rules and ethics, normally play the central or main role in society. The market, socio-cultural behavior and change in lifestyle of human beings have greatly affected the value system. Thus, the present values are combined or assimilated form of laws, rules, market and socio-cultural behaviour of human beings and do not ensure whether they are humane or not.
Media also regards laws, rules, socio-cultural system, market-promoted consumerism as quite practical; and, on this basis, inform and educate people to build a better society. This results in creating the conflicting values of the humanity and also in forming, thus, the present value system of society. Only the enlightened people of the society can change this conflicting and inter-contradictory situation. In this perspective, as long as the journalist himself does not accept and inculcate values and spirituality in his / her own personal and professional life, realize the roots of values and thereby become enlightened; he cannot be empowered to make us self-realized and also to inspire others through media. The present urgent need is that the journalist himself/herself has to be ‘enlightened’ first in order to change the society, which is founded on the so called values of the current system, market and consumerism culture as well as behavior.
The Media Conference is being organized from 21 to 25 September, 2018 at the Shantivan Campus, Abu Road, Rajasthan by the Media Wing of Rajyoga Education and Research Foundation (RERF), a sister organization of the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya (PBKIVV) on the topic: “Enlightened Media for Building a Better World”. The basic intent of the Conference is that the media persons should consider the untiring efforts of changing the society and finally resolve to take appropriate and effective steps in this regard by seeing and evaluating these in the current perspectives.
